The challenge of this print was to reimagine the characters and setting of SAGA (a modern comic) in a traditional Japanese ukiyo-e style. Japanese ukiyo-e prints are known for their beauty and simplicity – they have an epic feel to them. The motivation was to juxtapose the epic feel of ukiyo-e prints with the futuristic feel of SAGA. ukiyo-e prints are known for their rigorous and deliberate positioning of elements. My aim was to create a hierarchy based upon each character’s role in SAGA by utilizing a Ukiyo-e layout. Tradition ink and brush techniques were used to create the lines. The line work was then colored digitally with a limited pallet based on other ukiyo-e prints.
